i make things!!

english postal system

Thanks to the English postal system my birthday present from last year (september) has just arrive.

Now I have two arduino's :p

sound! domains! madness!

The first steps in getting sound output on my arduino are done, I've succesfully hooked up the ISD1700 chips with all the analogue gubbins that it needs and made it record from my laptops line-out. Had a little fun with this, the chip requires a resistor to set the sample rate. For what I'm doing it needs to be about 56K - the only one I could find was about 20 years old and covered in crud :/ Funnily it works but seems to vary in resistance, giving the sounds a great "fucked up vinyl" quality :d Might experiment with this and do some circuit bending style things with the other 4 I have

As of 9:45 this evening, the memory on the first chip is filled with eels :)

The next stage is to control it with the SPI bus from the arduino, shouldnt be too bad

Oh yeah, I've also gone on a domain registering bender - I now own http://upthear.se :D Thanks to Domain Hacks for that

Also ordered myself a 16x DVD burner laser module, plan to do some computer controlled laser cutting with it (or just piss cats off from miles away)

nabphp progress and sound making things

I've fixed an annoying issue with nabPHP, when I store a regular expression in the database PHP escapes everything with \'s, which is ace.... until you put it back out and stick it into a webpage then resubmit it. In short, the backslashes grow and grow and generally screw things up.

Its sorted now and running on my server at home, it seems to be working ok so a release could be coming up soon

On the Simons Pissed side of things, the ISD1700 chipcorders arrived yesterday, I've managed to record some things to it and play them back (through an old-school buzzer - no speakers here!). The analog input requires a 0.1uf capacitor (for low-pass filtering) and guess what? I havent got one :( Oddly my finger seems to work, if i bridge the connection with my finger the sound is pure and clear :p

The wonders of the human body eh?

recompiling PHP *again*

So i've finally got round to installing the nabaztag stuff on my server just to find that I forgot to compile in cURL support.

Off I go to recompile it *again*.

On the plus side the software actually works now, the scheduling kicks off on time and it generates the correct responses, it just cant send them to the bunny until cURL is fixed.

facebook and piss-poor documents

so i've been trying to update my facebook page remotely with various scripts and such, the idea being that I can write some apps that update my status for me. First idea was to have my server at home scan via bluetooth for my phone and if its present, set my facebook status to "at home", if not change it to something else.

You'd think this is easy, facebook provide a set of php classes to do this, however its really badly documented. By which I mean there doesnt seem to be any.

Shame, I had the BT scanner running, a nice messaging hub so other apps could update it but when it comes down to doing the update it requires me to login, gar!

Stuff it!

I started stocking up on electronics components on Saturday, some perfboard, solder, resistors, capacitors etc. I've got a nice stash of them all now :) Woolworths didnt have any Simon games in stock, looks like that'll be an eBay job (*shudder*). Sound chips havent arrived yet either :(

I've started thinking over the mobilephone RC car idea as well, I want it to be as cheap and throwawayable as possible, theres every chance this thing will go miles just to have some slack-jawed pikey nick it for his kids.

I've got an old nokia 3650 that can be programmed with java and python, but the only external devices it can support are infrared or bluetooth. IR is a p.i.t.a. to interface with and bluetooth is too expensive, might look into some DTMF decoders and control it with that.
